That's a wrap on our summer courses! Here at ClickPlay, students have really resonated with the idea of an archetype, and during our program we explore the "wild woman" archetype in classic folktales - and how this can be applied in developing characters for their films! So, it has inspired me to share with you a spoken-word poem about the female intuition, that is filled with wisdom and wonderful imagery. Have a listen!
If I Had a Daughter

I'm going to paint solar systems on the backs of her hands so she has to learn the entire universe before she can say, "Oh, I know that like the back of my hand."
I love this because it's saying that people should know things, from all sides, before making a claim as a truth. Without gathering all the information, often we are sure about something that may be completely wrong from someone else's perspective. And understanding the global picture of a situation - especially in today's digital ages flooded with information - is so important.
But getting the wind knocked out of you is the only way to remind your lungs how much they like the taste of air.
But that's what the rain boots are for, because rain will wash away everything, if you let it. When your boots will fill with rain,and you'll be up to your knees in disappointment. And those are the very days you have all the more reason to say thank you.
But I want her to know that this world is made out of sugar. It can crumble so easily, but don't be afraid to stick your tongue out and taste it.
These 3 ideas are wonderful because they reminds us that things get hard, it's completely natural. There are so many instances in our own environment that are beautiful as well as ugly, easy as well as hard, good as well as bad. Getting knocked out by the wind hurts, but also allows your lungs to feel. Rain washes away a beautiful day, but it can also away our pain. Sugar, which is sweet, is also crumbly. There's a magical duality in our world that encourages us to enjoy the good moments, and accept that the bad ones are there for us to appreciate the good. Without the bad times, we wouldn't know the good, so we should be thankful for those too.
Because there's nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline, no matter how many times it's sent away.
Similarly, we should always pick ourselves up and try again. Just like the ocean does when it gets pushed away. Or just like the beautiful sunrises do when the world is too asleep to see them. Our cyclical world comes back around and shows up for us. And we owe it to ourselves, and to our loved ones, to do the same. When things do not work out, there's always the promise of tomorrow.
Always apologize when you've done something wrong, but don't you ever apologize for the way your eyes refuse to stop shining.Your voice is small, but don't ever stop singing.
Finally, this passage motivates the young person to know their worth, even if they are overlooked. Of course, one should always act out of honesty & respect. But to apologize for your spirit, your imagination, or your capacity to empathize should never happen. You shouldn't bring yourself down or belittle who you are. Instead, embrace the sparkle in your eyes or the beauty in your voice. This is what makes you unique, and it's not to be discarded, but to be cherished as a gift.
